Some basic information on coat colors and how different genes affect them

The basic coat colors of chestnut, bay, brown and black horses are controlled by the interaction between two genes:
Extension (gene symbol E) and Agouti (gene symbol A). The Extension gene (red factor) controls the production of red and
black pigment. Agouti controls the distribution of black pigment either to a points pattern (mane, tail, lower legs, ear rims) or
colors in the domestic horse ranging from white to black.
The basic colors can be diluted by at least five genes: Cream, Champagne, Dun, Pearl and Silver. The Cream gene has a
dosage effect in that a single copy of Cream produces palominos, buckskins and smoky blacks. Two doses of Cream produce
cremellos, perlinos and smoky creams. Pearl is recessive; two copies of the gene or one copy of Pearl and one of Cream, are
needed to see the dilution effect on the coat color. Champagne, Dun and Silver do not show a dosage effect.
There are several genes responsible for white patterns on horses. White spotting patterns on the base coat color are
produced by the Dominant White, Appaloosa, Tobiano and Overo genes or as mixed white and colored hair patterns produced
by the Grey (progressive whitening with age) and Roan genes. Several genes are involved in the production of white spotting
patterns known as overo. Among those, the gene responsible for the frame-overo pattern is associated with a lethal disease
of newborn foals called Lethal White Overo foal syndrome.

With more than 41 PtHA Charters and
often more than one charter in a
state, PtHA members have local
opportunities to get together, enjoy
Pintos and develop new friendships.
PtHA Charters are given the
responsibility of advancing and
promoting the Pinto, encouraging
ideas of good horsemanship and good
sportsmanship, and providing activities
for PtHA members on a local basis
This club will bring together the common interests of
Miniature Horse enthusiasts around the world, who
share the pattern preferences recognized as
appaloosa and pintaloosa. This club will offer a place
for its members to come together without prejudice,
to discuss the interests and issues unique to the
appaloosa and pintaloosa Miniature Horses. Primary
goal is to encourage the production of correct and
balanced appaloosa or pintaloosa Miniature Horses
while maintaining the integrity of the breed according
to published Miniature Horse standards.
Identifying the Champagne
Colored Horse
The adult has pink skin
with abundant dark
freckles.
Champagne is a
color-modifying gene, like
bay or dun,  and not a term
for shiny, light or
strangely-colored horses.
The Cremello & Perlino Educational Association's
purpose is to educate the public and the equine
professional about the cremello and perlino coloration,
and to promote the appreciation of these colors (and,
by association, the palomino, buckskin, smoky black
and smoky cream colors,) in all breeds of horses.
Some may wonder, why should we be so interested in a
horse's color?  One of the most famous "Old Horseman's'
Tales", after all, is "a good horse is never a bad color." And
indeed, each horse's ability to do the job for which it was
intended is always the most important (for some, the only)
standard by which it is judged. Below is a link to a great site
with general info on identifying and breeding horses of color.
While we may become interested in equine color
genetics for a variety of reasons, most of those
reasons originate with a love of horses.
While at first glance color genetics can seem a
daunting subject as with anything it gets easier to
understand with association and practice. At
equine-color.info they strive to provide a friendly
understanding environment to make learning easier
Coat Color Calculator
This calculator will give you the possible offspring coat
colors and their probabilities when given the parents coat
color and pattern information. For a gray sire or dam, you
must enter what color the horse was before it went gray
as well as check the box labeled gray to the right of your
color selection. Calculation accuracy of the offspring color
possibilities and probabilities can be greatly increased
when providing the color genetics of the sire and dam.
Most color assignments can be correctly made based on
physical appearance or phenotype alone. However,
genetic testing may be necessary to define phenotypes
that are visually ambiguous or the color possibilities for
offspring. Currently, genetic tests for specific mutations
are available for: Extension (Red Factor), Agouti, Cream
Dilution, Pearl Dilution, Champagne Dilution, Silver
Dilution, Gray, Sabino 1, Tobiano and Lethal White Overo
