Worldwide, there are many standards of perfection for miniature horses and ponies, some liking the
equine to appear like full-sized horses while others like the stout look of their Shetland pony ancestors.

Miniature horses can be shown at any venue that accepts ponies, such as 4-H, driving, CDE, State Fair,
Open show circuits and Breed shows. Some examples of classes include: Halter, driving obstacle, single
pleasure driving, country pleasure driving, fine harness driving, liberty, color, showmanship, jumpers
in hand, hunters in hand and trail obstacle in hand.

The two main registries for miniature horses are the American Miniature Horse Association or AMHA
and the American Miniature Horse Registry or AMHR. Miniature horses are also eligible for registration
and participation in registries such as the PtHA, IBHA, CPA and the PHA - See below for info & links

•        Both the AMHA & AMHR registries issue temporary papers on a foal until they are 3 yrs old and
then issue permanent status after meeting height requirements and DNA testing. Horses not
brought permanent cannot have their foals registered.
•        Miniature horses are measured from the last mane hair, around the base of the withers.

•        The AMHA has just one division and allows miniature horses up to 34" tall at maturity to be
registered as permanent.
•        Horses that are not registered AMHA may sometimes be hard-shipped into the AMHA if they are
under 34" tall and meet the AMHA guidelines. See the AMHA web site for info and fees for hard-
shipping a horse into the American Miniature Horse Association.
•        Any AMHA or AMHR horse that goes over 34", but stays under 38" may be registered as a B
division horse with the AMHR. See the AMHR web site for rules and fees that apply.

•        AMHR is a branch of the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) registry.
•        AMHR has 2 divisions.... the A division is for horses maturing at or under 34" tall. B division is
for horses maturing between 34" and 38". A horse over 38" is not eligible for registry in AMHR.
•        AMHA registered horses may be double registered with the AMHR. The AMHR also allows for
ASPC registered Shetland ponies to be double registered if they meet height requirements.

•        Check out the AMHA & AMHR web sites to find more info on fees for double registering an ASPC
or AMHA horse in the AMHR. Scroll down for links to the AMHA and AMHR registries web sites.
AMHA and AMHR
The American Shetland Pony Club was founded in 1888 as a
registry to keep the pedigrees for all the Shetlands that were
being imported from Europe at that time.
It has expanded to four separate breeds under one club: The
Classic American Shetland Pony, The Modern American Shetland
Pony, The American Miniature Horse Registry and The American
Show Pony Registry.
